Choosing and preparing for garlic planting • Select a sunny spot. • Garlic thrives in fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7. If the soil is on the thin, sandy side, healthy additions of compost and aged manure or fertilizer should be considered. (fresh, unprocessed animal manure is usually avoided as it can transfer diseases.) • For an easy and large harvest, using heavily mulched raised beds, especially in heavy soil is recommended. Raised beds are usually two to three feet wide and at least 10 to 12 inches tall. • Periodic addition of lime to the soil is recommended.
